As for Transparency, I'd say that the PNG should work. If it doesn't, it's quite possible that there's something wrong with the PNG (e.g. transparency settings and so on). And I'm not sure why it would 'only affect' pw Efect and Offline Documents. There shouldn't be an issue at all. I would say that for me, making pw Efect work without having to apply a separate Opacity Map or similar (as it's not needed for whatever reason) is the main, and only reason that I use it.
