Jeremiah 52, which is the introductory chapter to the Prophecies of Jeremias, begins like this: "After Jehoiakim the son of Josiah came …. And Josiah the son of Jehoiakim, the king of Judah, came to Jerusalem unto them." The narrative ends like this: "And it came to pass, when Josiah had been some days in the society of the people, he said to them, 'The king had no son to pass on him, and it was a hard thing for all the people. Now therefore, let us enquire of the LORD concerning the matter of the kings of Israel;' and the people called a prophet … from the koinage, and he said unto them, 'Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, "Say to Josiah, the king, 'Thou shalt not die, and thou shalt not close thy life till I establish what I have spoken concerning thee."' Therefore now, as I live, saith the LORD, I have established this day that the house of Judah dwill walk in the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, which caused Israel to sin, and will go a whoring after other gods and walk in the sins of Samaria, and meddle with them that are therein, Phinees, the priest of Baal, and the people of the covenant with them."" The context is thus very clear: with a view to his own perpetuation, Josiah tries to persuade the people to lay down their lives in the hope of a renewal of Israel's prosperity. It is not surprising that the narrative so plainly advises against it. The historian who has been making the report has nothing to profit from Josiah's intentions of desiring to live for a thousand years. The ruin of Josiah and the ruin of the people are a single catastrophe. They receive the prophet's exhortation as a counsel of despair. If there was something in the report of the historian about the betrothal of the princess to Jechoniah, {see the comments about Jechoniah 4-5}, it is not to be condemned, as the double meaning is not unfavourable to Josiah, but on the other hand, to his successor, Jehoahaz. The time which the historian set forth in his narrative is very right. d2c66b5586
