Instead of offering a full analysis of this article, I've read an article (Jane 2009) by Jim McPherson. It's really interesting how it tried to explain how same sex relationships play a role in the way some states define prostitution and same sex relationships so the practice of same sex prostitution was considered illegal on the basis of that. But when the law finally became same sex marriage, it's now the legal requirement to only fall into the place of legal and illegal sex. And in the UK, a lot of people have been decriminalised as prostitutes. I noticed that some people [live sex workers] are: I guess that is working against this. The other side of the coin, is that that's how the state has started to protect them. Meanwhile we other campaigners refuse to believe or support that they're the same thing.
I think it's where then, on the basis of that, we need to work together. It's like the UN report which said that you should separate the two. But that doesn't solve the problem and we haven't advanced much further. So, in my view, I think that's where we need to work together. We need to come up with more ways to include sex workers and ways so that we can sort out the complexity of the system. Not just: no sex, no money, that's all we need to really move forward.
I think the most important thing is to get everyone involved in the process as well, so that we can collectively reach a decision. You know there's one thing which is really important about this because we, a lot of sex workers - immigrant sex workers in particular - need to be lifted out of their situation of being just sex workers, where they're expecting that's all that happens to them. They need to be recognised and enabled to really move forward with their lives and to really be able to function in society because the problems are so big that we don't have the resources to understand them and the resources to help them.
